As governments attempt to make more guns and gun ownership illegal, they succeed in doing so. It does not mean that fewer criminals are armed. Overall crime does not drop when controls are implemented. One of the reasons is that guns are fairly easy to make, and the materials to make them are virtually impossible for an industrial society to control. An unintended consequence is that submachine guns or machine pistols may be substituted for ordinary pistols. They are easier to make, because they are a simpler mechanism.

homemade, as is the silencer/suppressor.
One big benefit of the Apocalypse may be a considerable laxening of gun restrictions. It is funny to think we could get far better armament once the entirety of Western Civilization collapses, but that is really just a measure of how the governmental machinery is restricting our rights now.
More and more, the Apocalypse is looking like the best thing we could hope for.

Right now they have 3D printers that make metal parts. SpaceX makes rocket engine parts with them. They will eventually come down in price where you could easily make any type firearm you want.
