Some years back the mess that the Bolivarian socialists were making of Venezuela’s economy could be treated as a joke, a dark one to be sure but a joke all the same…
There were those of us who kept insisting that it wasn’t going to be amusing when those wheels did come off of course but we were, in general, shouted down by those who insisted that this Bolivarian socialism was something new, something wondrous. Look, look! Look how it reduced inequality, look how much better off the poor are! But as everyone who stayed awake in even their first economics class has always known those wheels would come off and it wouldn’t be pretty when they did. As has happened of course. And the latest evidence of this is that the old child killers are back. At present it’s diphtheria but it won’t be long before more of them start massacring the young. Measles, whooping cough cannot be far behind and it’s only because we’ve entirely wiped out smallpox that it won’t be making an appearance…
Hundreds of cases in just one state now. And a death rate of 5 to 10% even with decent treatment, something that doesn’t exist in Venezuela at present. Perhaps the most appalling part of this being that it’s not that difficult to prevent. Just vaccinate everyone already. And even that’s not expensive–the UN, or parts of it, will provide the vaccine itself for virtually nothing. What is needed though is the medical infrastructure to be able to reach the entire population and that’s another thing the Chavistas have destroyed.
File away that diphtheria may end up vaccine resistant soon. That is how it happens, and it will not be the last conquered disease to come rushing back.
Antibiotic resistance, migrant-spread pestilence, stress-mediated immune suppression, economically insufficient public health systems, breakdowns in civil order impacting medication production and distribution – as Venezuela shows, the Apocalypse will have it all. And it all will favor those who live in lower population densities, those who stay away from the degeneracy of the r-strategists, and those who follow the K-strategy.
Even now, as our own Apocalypse approaches, Venezuela is warming the engines of the pandemic, giving these diseases a foothold in human petri dishes, where they can begin to adapt, looking for mutations that can better bypass human defenses and overcome treatments. Then just as our health systems begin to deteriorate, these new, improved pathogens can hitch a ride north on the migrant wave, and begin wiping out the r-strategists up here.
K will win out in the end, as it always does.
