You Could Kill A Liberal With An Amygdala Hijack

Maybe not every case, but at least some:

Acclaimed author Jeff Gillenkirk died of a heart attack this week, two days after publication of his final article, “The New PTSD: Post-Trump Stress Disorder.”

Gillenkirk, 67, suffered the heart attack Tuesday while teaching a class of third-graders in San Francisco, Alternet reported.

Mr. Gillenkirk, an Alternet contributor and onetime speechwriter for former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, wrote in his final article of the severe anxiety he and others have experienced in the aftermath of Donald Trump being elected president…

“Anguishing yet again over election results in the middle of the night, I finally realized I’m experiencing something similar to PTSD,” reads Mr. Gillenkirk’s article, which was published Sunday. “Triggered by the election, to the most powerful office in the world, of a man who’s espoused wholesale exclusion of Muslim immigrants, deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, repealing Roe v. Wade, abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency and encouraging Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia to develop nuclear weapons, among other polarizing proposals…”

It is highly stressful to the human brain to exist in an environment for which you are not designed. Yet I cannot help but think, being designed for resource shortage, and being forced to endure the minor irritations of having an r-selected population about you as you languish in relative wealth and ease must be easier than being designed for resource excess, and begin cast into a violent, terrifying world of threat and shortage, where death lurks around every corner. Yet still, being K in a time of r is stressful. Imagine the torment of being r in a time of K.

If you view the mind as merely a “personality,” it is difficult to imagine how Trump’s Presidency and this guy’s heart attack could be linked. But if you understand the amygdala as a mechanical structure, wired directly into the stress systems of the body, and designed to take a registered mental stress, turn on the body’s stress systems, resolve the stress, and then turn off the body to let it recuperate, things appear different. A damaged amygdala, which has failed to develop the ability to resolve a threat, can leave the body in a permanently agitated state from which it never recovers, until it simply burns out.

That is probably what happened here, and while most cases are not so dramatic, mainly because the liberals afflicted are not so physically fragile, all of them endure physical costs. And those costs are produced by mere ideas and concepts they register in their brain. It is a critical step in grasping how the human machine can be hacked, turning the virtual and amorphous world of ideas and concepts into a physical manifestation of material reality.

I was relieved when Trump won and Hillary lost. No PTSD for me!

What you say about the Amygdala is interesting. Supposedly the night before Theodore Roosevelt died he commented on how as a youth he had vowed to live life and engage in the world “to the hilt”, and after that, it didn’t matter. He died a bit more than two months after his 60th birthday, in apparent good health, but still mourning the loss of his son, Quentin Roosevelt.
He died because he decided it was time.
Would that more Leftists felt as Theodore Roosevelt did then.

I think Teddy was an r-turned-K, sickly and week as a boy and then decided to overcompensate and wrestle every alligator and climb every hill he could find as an adult. Sometimes I wonder if his life is a model to be emulated or merely studied.

It makes you wonder how much of r/K is genetic vs environmental. I can barely imagine the stress of being wired for ease and living in a world of constant threat. It would be like playing one of those video games where invisible enemies can pop up and waste you at any moment, but there aren’t any upgrades to see them.
