I think when the collapse hits, the initial response will be shock and catatony. As it progresses, something hidden may very well escape that will destroy all support for the federal government. Whether it will fall or not I cannot be certain, though I expect a lot of the populace will see it as a menace. If they have their way, we might revert to states loosely allied by some sort of treaty they will organize on the fly. Within some of those states may erupt small civil wars along racial lines, between haves and have nots, but that will be the small news.
But there will be very rich and powerful forces trying to hold the federal government together because it serves their ends. I can’t say they won’t win. But government has grown so big that it needs much of its resources now to maintain its image and control. If it loses that ability to control perceptions and awareness, it may not be able to remain.
I know I’ve seen behind the curtain, and I would prefer the alternative.
As for the picture, I’ve seen that image. The problem will be the bigger the “nation,” even if psychologically aligned overall, the more the leaders become detached from those they oversee, and the more they are willing to do things to people who they don’t see as community members so much as peasants. The smaller the “nations,” the more responsive the leaders should be, the less able to be corrupted they will be, and the more they will treat citizens as neighbors. Personally I’d prefer that, and I think a lot more people will one day as well.
A conflict could probably be avoided if individual US states are given more autonomy in their own affairs. A forward thinking President could help ensure that.

The dude makes an obvious, but you never think about point, the USA has lots of chokepoints that favor the people in the interior of the country versus the Northeast/Cali. coast. In a worst case scenario, no way that the Northeast or California could feed or water or power itself as the mountain highway passes/infrastructure could be controlled easily by an opposing force.
