If you’ve been to jury duty, you will remember the judge telling you not to research the case, don’t watch the news, don’t talk to anyone, etc. Those are the rules for petit juries. For a Grand Jury, those rules don’t apply. A Grand Jury is allowed to do its own research. They are allowed to watch the news.
Most importantly, they are allowed to see all the reports that being indicted will just make Trump stronger, they are allowed to see Chris Rock warning them, etc. The Grand Jury is going to take that into account. That’s why Trump won’t be indicted.
This one is another technical one. Lake was poured out on everything but this. On this one, the court said that the lower court ruled wrongly when they ruled that Lake couldn’t prevail on the signature policy because of laches.
Laches (pronounced like “latches”) is a term that means you didn’t complain when you should have, you waited too long. My real world analogy is that you can’t watch someone make spaghetti and meatballs, wait until it is on the table, and then complain that you didn’t want meatballs. The time to complain was when you were watching them making the meatballs, not when they are served.
The lower court applied laches because it said that Lake was challenging the signature verification rules, and if she had a problem with them, her chance to complain was when they were put in, not after she lost the election. The ASC ruled that her argument wasn’t against the standards, but whether or not the standards were applied properly in this case. Laches won’t apply, because she can’t complain about how they apply the standards until they apply the standards — if she tried before, she wouldn’t have standing because it wouldn’t have happened. It’s a HUGELY high standard to complain about what someone MIGHT do. You are supposed to wait until they have done it and then sue.

I don’t know how long they’ve been an enemy, but I remember the early 1980s when they spent quite a bit of money opposing proposed requirements for them to vet blood donors and not let AIDS-contaminated blood into the supply. So they were fully converged by then.

In fairness, I don’t think it was just the Red Cross, but the entire blood industry. Initially, since there was no way to conclusively detect AIDS (early on there was still a lot of confusion as to what it was) they discovered that many with AIDS also had Hepatitis B. So one of the CDC doctors (Dr. Francis, I believe) suggested at least testing donors for Hepatitis B. The blood industry replied that was unreasonably costly, not 100% sure, etc., etc.
I’m not sure how the blood industry behaved after more refined testing methods were developed.
