Signs Of Apocalypse – Jenkem

I suppose if you live in a shithole, and want to get high…

Jenkem is a supposed inhalant and hallucinogen created from fermented human waste. In the mid-1990s, it was reported to be a popular street drug among Zambian street children. They would put the feces and urine in a jar and cover it with a balloon then let it ferment out in the sun, then afterwards they would inhale the fumes created.

For some reason I read the following flashback, and hear the Donald saying, People, they’re not sending us their best, I can tell you that!:

We’re not sure what they’re inhaling down in Collier County, Florida, but here’s the bizarre ‘information bulletin’ prepared by the local sheriff’s intelligence bureau about a purported ‘new drug’ favored by the kids.

It’s an inhalant called ‘Jenkem,’ and causes hallucinations and a ‘euphoric high.’ Of course, as the bulletin notes, Jenkem users dislike its sewagey taste, which can last for days. That’s because Jenkem’s active ingredients are urine and fecal matter, hence its street names like ‘Butthash’ and ‘Fruit from Crack Pipe.’

And you thought the Saudi prince with the fart fetish from a few days back was strange.

These are the days of Apocalypse. It can’t be far away. It can’t be.

You should tell others about r/K Theory, because we need the Apocalypse

Sounds like the content of a south park episode.

The “Major Boobage” episode, where the kids get high by engaging in ‘cheesing’, or huffing urine from aggressive male cats.

Maybe the show creators were inspired by reports of Jenkem. I remember 4chan threads on the subject around the same time. The South Park guys, Matt and Trey, have a way of taking real-world examples of absurd things and working them into their episodes. Somewhat related, the first time I heard about NAMBLA was from an episode of theirs. I just assumed it was made up by them because of just how absolutely ridiculous it sounded.

They’re just inhaling methane and killing brain cells. More zombies in the making.

While I have no doubt there are even more unusual and distasteful practices than what I’ve seen traveling in the ‘developing world’, this is not one of them. This has been a pretty well debunked urban legend (or proto-meme?) that even conned law enforcement, as you can see, going all the way back to the mid nineties. I ran into it myself in the mid 2000s, it seems to reply on recursive reporting of prior unsubstantiated reports. Perhaps it’s so outrageous and easily plausible r-behavior that gives this myth its staying power, along with the nature of the internet.

Fantastic blog, keep up the good work, sometimes when examining things on the edge of the known its easy to lose balance and fall into a rabbit hole.

The gases are primarily methane along with carbon dioxide and a little hydrogen sulfide. The carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are asphyxiants, and prolonged exposure will kill you. Methane, like all the other low molecular weight alkanes is hallucinatory. You might remember the butane huffing rage from a few years back.

When I first read about Jenkem, somebody in the comments section said it was libel (well, she said slander, but I translated). I actually decided she was right, because surely nobody would huff that [literal] shit. I can’t believe it’s not only real but it’s made its way to our shores What planet is this?

Just when you think you’ve seen it all. (The number of times I’ve said that over the many years is depressing.) There is no end to the degeneracy.

Although entertaining, this is almost certainly – if not a hoax, then at least false. https://infogalactic.com/info/Jenkem

About.com also concluded reports were “based on faulty Internet research.”[8] The Smoking Gun stated the Collier County alert “may be full of shit”.[16] Drug research site Erowid reported, “the jenkem stories that have been circulating in the U.S. media are almost certainly the strange result of a hoax.”[17]

Wouldn’t the hallucinations be from biochemical breakdowns creating ammonia? Why not just sniff ammonia to get high instead of smelling all kinds of nasty? Those crazy rabbits.
