I’m currently in Ukraine. I’ve run into the typical “guns are bad mindset” here. Ukraine has little experience with being free. Ukrainians have little experience with being citizens instead of subjects. It is going to take a while for the attitudes to change.
On the positive side, Ukraine is not a diverse culture and so the level of social trust here is much higher. I am much less concerned about being the victim of a violent crime here in Kherson than I am back home in Austin. I’ve had folks try to hustle me on the street, but there has never been any sense of possible violence. I see girls walking alone or in pairs late at night without fear of being grabbed.
I see a great deal of optimism here. Lots of shiny new businesses. Many restaurants have very good service, not the usual lousy service so common to Europe. The previous generation lived in “Hard Times” and seems to have produced “Strong Men”. I expect the next couple of generations to be “Good Times” until the “Weak Men” destroy it.
It would be nice to see Ukrainian fertility rates pick up. If that doesn’t happen then the next couple of generations won’t be “Good Times”.
I see a lot of baby carriages on the street here and a surprising number of double carriages.
Mind you, I’m willing to help increase the birth rate as well…
