My guess is, this has to do with two effects. High long form DRD4 carriage probably produces a more hedonistic personality, less tolerant of the discomfort that is involved in working and building muscles. That produces a frailer, less daring character that is more likely to fail in competitions. There may also be an epigentic effect involved in those who are placed in an r-selected environment. This is probably related to the reversal in sex-specific characteristics that occurs in the shift to r.
The other factor is, once you have a child growing up afraid of discomfort and hardship, and physically inferior, they will probably be conditioned to avoid competition, and this will burn into the brain the more r-selected psychology that expects free resource provisioning.
This is the r-selected psychology’s origin, at a strict, mechanistic micro-level. At the larger macro-level, you have the evolution of a psychology that is ideal for the r-selected environment of glut. It is at once, both practical at the micro-level, and elegant at the macro-level. For that reason, of all the mechanisms nature has had at its disposal, this is the one which she selected to exploit the environment of glut.

Environment can have quite the epigentic effect:
In high school, my girlfriend came over to my house, seeing 140 lbs on the bench press she asked to try it; she did 10 reps without breaking a sweat. She is 5’2″ and weighed 135 lbs at the time. Later, at various times of dragging her to the gym, while lifting weights people would stare and a lot of men wandered off to do something else.
While I was impressed then, I later learned that this innate strength was related to generations of abuse which did end the marriage because she could not function healthily due to the mental health trauma. This trait was passed to my daughter, who was also abused–not by me, I was out of the picture when it occurred. And now my grand-daughters are showing signs of this kind of strength.
While her strength is abnormal, and quite extreme, it would serve a purpose for survival were men not around but otherwise is actually an impairment because she was under the impression she didn’t need me around which then put our daughter at risk thus continuing the cycle.
