So I’m watching BBC News the other night. On comes a video of this:
In truth that picture didn’t do justice to the video, which was beyond bizarre. It featured that dude, complete with well-groomed beard, mascara, and eye shadow, walking like a woman, in a gown, heading up to the stage to receive an award of some sort. On the stage the bearded he/she/it/xie did the whole demure smiling shrug thing you’d expect from a pretty prom queen as it cradled the award while the crowd leapt to its feet to give a standing ovation, and everyone on stage smiled approvingly. The BBC host was gushing about how this bearded-dude-in-a-dress winning an award was such a massive accomplishment for our civilization.
As the initial shock wore off, I saw blog gold, but I could only grab the name “Conchita” before it flipped off and the new news segment began.
Fortunately there is only one transgendered singer named Conchita, with a beard, who won an award recently so I didn’t have to spend too long tracking this down on google.
The full name is Conchita Wurst, and apparently the media has crowned him the “Queen of Austria. “
The music awards show which the original video came from featured a singing performance by this thing as it flew over the audience on strings like a little birdie. At least it had the taste to wear a pantsuit and not do so in a dress. I imagine at least somebody in the crowd would have been permanently damaged had they inadvertently looked up and added a pair of hairy testicles to the sum of that visage.
It is one thing to see the typical reversal of sex specific traits and sexual dimorphism you’d expect when resources are provided freely to a population, and the reproductive strategy shifts from K-selection to r-selection. But what is most disturbing, on a visceral level, is seeing everyone else act as if this is normal, or even good.
Sometimes I wonder just what it would be like to have known nothing but a commonsense K-selected world around you, and then log onto the internet and pull up a video from such a massively r-selected period. I’m pretty sure if you just wrote about this, and showed it to a WWII vet living in the middle of the nineteen-fifties, he would not have believed it.
I think that were you to go from pure K-selection to witnessing a society’s open acceptance of pure r-selection, the amygdala confusion that would ensue would be psychically damaging in some regard. It would be like being kidnapped by aliens to be anally probed, and ending up in a mental institution due to the shock.
Clearly, looking at this and how far the pendulum has swung toward r-selection, there is every reason to believe that the Apocalypse which resets this will be epic, with unimaginable levels of death and destruction. Vast swaths of this world are going to have to die horribly. It will be awful.
However for the time being, I’m just so incredibly grateful for how this simplifies the process of searching for blog material.
