The prolonged hacking into the White House Office of Personnel Management, which put the personal information of at least some 21.5 million past and current federal employees in jeopardy, is only the beginning of the security threat to the Obama Administration and its successors, a number of top-level experts in cybersecurity have told Fox News. The attack has been frequently sourced as coming from China.
The experts warned that the entire U.S. national security clearance system could be compromised, that future senior government leaders and advisors could be targeted even before taking office, and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of government officials might successfully be blackmailed, bribed or otherwise manipulated in the future into handing over still more sensitive information.
Some are saying it is even worse. Supposedly the intruders didn’t just have the authority to take data out, they had the authority to put data in, and change data that was already in. Some second generation Chinese-American clerk somewhere may have had cleared access to much more sensitive data than they should have had for the last year or more. Nobody has any idea what they downloaded. They could have gotten everything down to thumb drives, had their older, less sensitive clearance restored, and now nobody is the wiser.
The very database designed to protect our secrets, may itself be a foreign government’s creation.
One other factor – the FBI creates very detailed files on individuals who work for the government in sensitive positions, containing all the data they can find that could be used to blackmail them. I assume if you were to become President Ted Cruz’s Chief of Staff and you were surveillance aware, you’d begin to notice FBI surveillance around you, clocking everything about your life, from your weakness for high end scotch, to the mistress in Arlington you visit bi-weekly.
Hillary was amazed at the information in what I believe are just summary files of the real files. That’s why she immediately ordered all the FBI files on all the Republican opposition when Bill Clinton first came into office, as if she needed to do security checks on them, causing the FBI File scandal.
It is not impossible all of that data is in the Chinese government’s hands as well. In truth, we have no idea of how much they actually got.
