In-grouping and Splintering In Germany And France

It is happening in Germany:

As a local lawmaker in the east German city of Magdeburg who regularly speaks out against the far right, Soeren Herbst has endured years of animosity.

But the sight that greeted him outside his home last week made the Green Party politician realise that the abuse had reached a new level.

Someone had sprayed a gallows on the front of his house, along with Herbst’s name and the word ‘Volksverraeter’ – traitor to the German people.

It is happening in France too:

Anti-Islam protesters armed with flares and banners reading ‘Throw out Islamists’ descended on a quiet vigil being held for the victims of the Paris terror attacks in northern France…

However, Front National leader and lawyer Gilbert Collard responded to the Anti-Islam outbreak with: ‘Those habitual defenders of great principles, those who defend Islam and its principles, they are the ones who should be in prison. Quickly. It’s now a question of our survival.’

There are two factors which will fuel violence, both side effects of in-grouping. First is being driven to action by love and loyalty toward others. K-strategists are very resilient personally, but can be driven to action far more easily by loyalty to others. As in-grouping increases loyalty and fosters group competition, loyalty-triggered conflict becomes much more likely.

The second factor will be grouping. Groups will produce much more wild behavior than individuals acting alone. An individual will scrawl graffiti. A group might just decide to grab up the politician as he arrives home, throw a bag over his head, and take him somewhere isolated to scare him, or even worse.

There is no doubt of the direction this is all heading. The only question is, how far will it go?
