K-Selection Is Big Business

Some things sell better than others as K-selection approaches:

The FBI performed 2,523,265 firearms-related background checks between March 1 and March 31, according to the agency’s records. That’s a new record for the month. It’s nearly 35,000 more checks than the previous record set in March 2014.

Despite the new record, March saw the fewest checks of any month so far in 2016.

The March record is the eleventh straight monthly record for background checks. The unprecedented streak, which began in May 2015, has included all-time records for both monthly and yearly sales. With 7,682,141 checks processed through the FBI’s National Instant Background Check System, 2016 is currently on pace to set another all time yearly sales record.

Things are still relatively r, but K-strategists feel the tingles in the air and it is driving them to prepare for the Apocalypse.

What never ceases to fascinate me is how this detection system is really ancient brain circuitry, laid in the blueprints of our genes eons ago, under conditions we can’t imagine today. The vast majority of us have never seen these conditions up close. But our brain recognizes the subtle cues signaling its approach, because it is built to. That such a finely tuned and complex detection system was driven into us by Darwinian selection gives you an idea how common such conditions and shifts were in our ancient evolutionary history.

Today, even as we are awash in enough money to buy enough guns to periodically crash the federal background check system, those circuits in the back of our brain are making sure we don’t waste that money, and that when the time comes we can wantonly kill as many savages as our hearts desire.

It really highlights how the right Apocalypse would remake the nation in very short order. One psychology is preparing at the first signs of trouble, while the other remains so blind it wants to import more Muslims to try and avoid the Apocalypse entirely.

One mindset will survive. The other? Not so much…
