This indirectly brings me to Sam Altman, CEO of Y-Combinator, and a billionaire investor. He’s embarking on an experiment to see what happens when you give citizens free money, no strings attached. This is important because our robot-centric future will mean the end of most forms of human labor. And that means one of two things, in all likelihood: 1) 90% of the world starves to death while the robot-owners thrive, or 2) 90% of the world receives some sort of “free money” from the rich, with no strings attached. Sam is testing option two.
Stop right there. I know what you are thinking. You’re thinking it is far too soon to be thinking about a robot takeover of labor. But you might not know that Sam is heavily invested in robot startups. He’s seen things you haven’t seen. If he’s planning for a robot takeover of labor, get worried. He’s not guessing.
You cannot view this solely in terms of social policy. You have to view this in terms of ecology, reproductive strategies, and reproductive rates.
What will happen is you will give the free money out. As it floods into the population it will be like chemotherapy flooding into a body. Some individuals will buy condoms and birth control pills, and the party will be on. They will be the cancer cells the chemotherapy kills, and they will cease to be an issue quite quickly as they fail to reproduce.
But others, perhaps just a handful, will spend the money on drugs, and have unprotected sex. Others, maybe very few, will just prefer the feeling of unprotected sex, or they will get hives when taking birth control pills. Others will look at children as if they are puppies, and they will want as many of them as they can get, and they will use the money to fuel that.
These will be the cancer cells that are resistant to chemotherapy. As they multiply up, even more resistant, faster reproducing cells will emerge within the population, and begin to dominate the next generation.
Eventually, that population will explode in number, until the billionaire robot-barons cannot afford to fuel their explosion with free resources. By that point, the choice for the robot barons will be, raze the entire population to the ground, and kill everyone in a cataclysm of violence, or get ready to end up hanging from lamp posts – after which the reality of a world without robot-barons will cull the population back to the ground anyway.
The only way you could try to avoid that outcome is by making implantable birth control required to get your free money. But the only way you get that far is by recognizing the clever, and often infuriating nature of reproductive life – it is designed to reproduce, and do so quite aggressively whenever it can get away with it. Taken together, life is designed to flow like a river into an ocean of Apocalypse. You can dam it up, but sooner or later that dam will give, and the longer you hold it off, the worse it will be.
This would also affect immigration, as once a country offers a free income with no requirements for getting it, you can expect immigration problems. That will appeal to certain people, and attract certain types of immigrants. To say nothing of the effect on the r/K psychological balance of the population. As you create an incentive for freeloading migrants to close in, you alter the population to welcome the most violent among them, and you preferentially breed the most fecund. What could go wrong?
I predict the first country to offer it will collapse into an orgy of violence, and a century of third world living standards, if even.
The whole thing has a Brave New World feel to it though, anyway. I hope there is a way for individuals who want to strive to abandon the whole livestock lifestyle in the future, and set out on their own path away from the masses.

This is why the welfare state is the ultimate enemy of the West. Humans adapt to their environment. The welfare state recreates the environment of a tropical jungle, after a rainstorm with fresh water and fruit everywhere. The humans that live there just pick the fruit and eat it. Create any kind of welfare state and you eventually get the tropics, as well as humans adapted for that environment. Cold/temperate adapted humans are naturally conservative, but late in a cycle right before collapse a temperate climate society (The West, Rome, Song China) can create weaker liberal non-conservatives who assume resources are free and then import their tropical behavioral brethren, or let in a hostile outgroup (Rome and Barbarians, Song China and Mongols). The only question for the West is whom the hostile competitive outgroup is. I would suspect Communist China, maybe Islam (if they’re competitive) or perhaps some malevolent rabbit created AI. We’ll probably get all three whilst dealing with the tropicals not getting their fruit.
Agree 100%. Eliminate welfare in the Apocalypse, and a small monetary reward would be all it would take to get the welfarites to self-deport to a socialist state somewhere.

The Welfare state already ate its own seed grain so this thing will be up in a decade or so when european nations hit the mark where for every over 65 year old there will be just two beneath that age. Not to speak of the dependency ratios before that date. Just a small part of the populations work anyway, the rest is either redistribution parasitism or family. Untill that point i support the free money idea just for the sake of political migration. Just imagine what these people afraid of the Doxxing will do when the loose of employment isn’t a threat anymore. They would probably form hate houses and train and fight the whole day. Compared to what we have today a basic income will decrease violence and aberrational, criminal behavior, IF, it’s given equally to Men, Women are not paid for children at all and it can no way be taken away from Men for any reason(child care or anything short of being in jail. Also it cannot be taken for debt). In this case the cheapest way to live would be for Women to pair with Men which would add a brake to some of the dysfunction in the inner cities.
All the other disadvantages cited are true but you have to compare them to the present system of paying for kids and section 8 which is destroying whole regions as Black feral Women have masses of feral Black children.
If the robber barons are smart, then before resources are completely exhausted, they’ll set a kill switch to shut down the welfare system and wreck all the robots on a specific date. No self-destruct mechanism is needed because any non-trivial machine will suffer permanent damage if given the wrong commands (cf. Israel’s Stuxnet virus destroying Iran’s centrifuges).
Then be sure to get out of town before it blows — ship off to the Moon or Mars, or hide in a nuclear-powered submarine cruising silently beneath the oceans while the masses butcher each other.
