As the first quarter of 2016 nears an end, violence in Chicago has reached levels unseen in years, putting the city on course to top 500 homicides for only the second time since 2008.
As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, homicides totaled 135, a 71 percent jump over the 79 killings in the same year-earlier period, official Police Department statistics show. That represented the worst first quarter of a year since 136 homicides in 1999, according to the data.
Shootings have jumped by comparable numbers as well. As of Wednesday, at least 727 people had been shot in Chicago so far this year, a 73 percent rise from 422 a year earlier, according to a Tribune analysis of department data.
Worse yet, that jump follows two consecutive years in which shootings rose by double digits, the analysis found. Homicides also rose by about 12.5 percent last year over 2014.
They can massage the Misery Index by altering unemployment and inflation calculations, but they can’t hide dead bodies.
This is a direct out-growth of the angst that is growing in the nation. It infects everyone. The investor grows a little more irritated with the size of his dividends. The crazy husband goes a little crazier, and maybe tries to kill his wife. The leftist agitator grows more incensed at the brazen disregard people have for his feelings, to the point of going somewhere and throwing blows. Blacks get angry at whites, whites get angry at blacks, foreigners rage at natives, natives rage at foreigners, and criminals grow so angsty that minor stresses push them over the edge into unbelievably bad behavior, even including killing. It is all amygdala, set on edge by minor resource restriction.
As this takes off, small pockets like the cuckservatives of the GOPe, who are insulated from the stress, are at first left scratching their heads at how conservatives would look to the one candidate who promises to burn it all down. To them, nothing has changed.
Yet it has, and now the angst is creeping into their lives.
The good thing is that angst is K-ifying. It activates the amygdala and develops it. Before the Apocalypse is over, even the Cuckservative elites may be turning conservative and patriotic. Streets littered with dead bodies will do that.

Maybe Chicago should try banning guns or increasing welfare, or upping the minimum wage. I hear that’s what turned Detroit around.
